Calgary: Stampede City and Heart of the Canadian West
Come west to Calgary! Explore the history of the Northwest Mounted Police, the building of the Canadian Pacific Railroad and the rigors of cowboy life on the range. Share a meal with the host of Calgary past at turn-of-the-century Heritage Park and learn about early pioneer life. Discover the spirit of Calgary with a day at the world-famous Calgary Stampede with championship rodeo, thundering chuckwagon races and evening grandstand show. Let us take you to the splendour of the Rockies in Banff National Park with a day-trip to Banff and Lake Louise. We will visit the venues that made the XV Winter Olympics a major athletic and financial success, and show you Calgary as the locals see it. Expect daily field trips and moderate walking.
Canadian Rockies Adventure - Intergenerational
Come visit us with your grandkids! This exciting program is very active and very hands-on. We visit all the best sites in Southern Alberta. The adventure includes hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and white water rafting! Each museum we visit is very unique and very kid-friendly. We explore the world famous Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology, where the world’s largest collection of intact dinosaur skeletons is housed, as well as UNESCO world heritage site Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. We visit the birthplace of Canada’s national parks in Banff, world famous Lake Louise, the 1904 Frank Slide disaster, a historic working ranch, and we go underground for a coal-mine tour.
Canadian Rockies High-Alpine Adventure
Spend a week in August at Amiskwi Lodge. This spectacular hiking trip is the ultimate end-of-summer treat. Enjoy a small intimate group, no crowds, helicopter access, and stunning alpine terrain right outside our front door! Amiskwi Lodge is situated in a lush alpine meadow, just outside of the border of Yoho National Park. Rugged glacier-capped peaks, pristine mountain lakes and great hiking surround the lodge. Imagine ridge-walks, strolls through wildflower meadows and along creeks - without driving to the trailhead! Highly experienced guides lead you on a different trail each day, while you learn about mountain geology, glaciology, human history, vegetation and wildlife specific to the area. Study the rugged yet fragile ecology of the alpine world and learn about the challenges the future holds for our mountain environments. Top that off by spending relaxing evenings around the wood stove, in the sauna, or stargazing on the deck. Program registration is limited to 10 people so contact us soon!
Canadian Rockies Mountain Hiking
Join us for trail hiking at its best as we explore the picturesque trails in Kananaskis, nearby Banff National Park, and Lake Louise. Explore alpine meadows, sub-alpine forest, and montane wildflowers. Discussions on geology, glaciology, history, and flora and fauna will be featured on our daily walks and hikes. This is a very active program for avid hikers, able to hike at least 5 miles (8 km) per day on varied terrain with elevation gains up to 2,000 feet (600 meters). Highest elevation is 8,000 feet.
Kettle Valley Railway: Cranking Out Adventure
Hailed as an “engineering marvel”, the KVR was a lifeline that linked the mining towns of the British Columbia interior through rugged mountain terrain. Restored and upgraded as a top-notch recreational bike trail, it is part of the Trans-Canada Trail and offers a dynamic ride through an impressive landscape of mountains, canyons, orchards, vineyards, lakes and sandy beaches. The easy grades and relaxed pace will allow you time to explore charming villages, area history, geology, and ecology as you bike along the famous bridges, trestles, and tunnels. Sample wine and enjoy lunch at a local vineyard en route to Penticton. Discover the area’s historic lodgings including rustic log cabins, heritage inns and B.C.’s oldest operating hotel in Beaverdell. Cycle through the spectacular Myra Canyon, Okanagan Falls, and the arts community of Naramata. Discuss the restoration of the Myra Canyon Trestles after the devastating forest fires of 2003.
Exploring Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks
Designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks are comprised of seven contiguous alpine parks that straddle the Great Divide for 14,300 square miles. We'll explore five of the parks-Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho, and Mount Robson-focusing on natural history, ecological integrity, and the parks' cultural heritage. Professional guides, park staff, and local experts will be our instructors in these alpine classrooms of the Canadian Rockies. Walking up to two miles per day on uneven terrain. This program can be found in the Exploritas International Catalogue.
Best of Banff: Our Mountain Heritage
Come experience the best of Banff and Lake Louise, highlighting the finest cultural, historical and artistic landmarks in Banff National Park. Stories of Canada’s first National Park come to life with visits to the heritage homes of founding explorers and artists. See firsthand how early pioneers lived through personal artifacts, antiques and displays. Celebrate the artistic roots of Banff with a field trip to the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Enjoy a visit to the scenic Lake Louise and the famous chateau, and learn why it became a resort for the rich and famous. Experience a High Tea at the "castle" of the Rockies, the Banff Springs Hotel.
Rockies by Rail: Western Canada's Splendour
We will discover Western Canada's geology and ecology as we travel across Alberta to British Columbia by rail. On our journey through the Rockies and other mountain ranges and down the Fraser Valley, we will focus on land forms, glacial history, ancient environments, plants, and animals. We will also study First Nations people, the history of the Gold Rush and the railway, and evolving relationships between people and the natural environment. Special features will be two days of train travel during daylight hours when we can observe our surroundings as we learn about them. Extensive walking, carrying baggage on/off trains. This program can be found in the Exploritas International Catalogue.
Pathways Through the Peaks
Discover western Canada as the explorers did. We will follow the ancient pathways as we travel from Calgary to the fabled Kootenay Plains, and onto Lake Louise, the heartland of the Golden Age of Mountaineering. We will also walk through historic Banff to see it as it was over 100 years ago. This program will focus on explorers, fur traders and adventurers of old, living on the frontier and will also touch on glaciology, landforms, and First Nations history.
